Squirrel!

In the animated movie UP, there’s a scene when a dog is seriously focused – only to be distracted when it sees a squirrel.

The dog is on a mission. All it takes is one squirrel, and the dog loses focus. I think most of us can relate to that dog!

We’re excited about a new project. Inspired by creativity, we begin to set the course of action that will move the undertaking from dream to reality. At times the process is slower than we want, but we remain dedicated to the task.

Then, without warning… SQUIRREL!

Days, weeks, and even months can pass before we realize we’ve been distracted by a squirrel.

Squirrel’s come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They often look like emergencies. At other times, they are pleasant – and a welcomed alternative when the task before us is difficult.

Unfortunately, none of us work in a “squirrel-free” environment. Nor, is our spiritual life “squirrel-resistant.”

The author of Hebrews stresses the necessity of discipline. Using language familiar with athletes in the arena, we are admonished:

“…let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles [distracts us]. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1b-2, NIV).

In a world filled with squirrels, we will never be exempt from distractions. While I’m not suggesting that squirrels are bad or evil, I am aware of how often the enemy of our soul uses squirrels to distract us from our focus.

Perhaps, like me, you’re experiencing an infestation of squirrels. Some of them are may be necessary. A lot of them are not.

“Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (vs. 3).

Here’s what I’m aware of…

… If we lose our focus on “him,” Jesus, we will become weary and lose heart because of distraction.

What’s distracting you? Is it time to shift our focus from squirrels to Jesus?

Praying for all of us!
